There’s a girl in the corner With tear stains on her eyes From the places she’s wandered And the shame she can’t hide She says, “How did I get here? But don’t you know who you are, You are more than the choices that you’ve made, Well she tries to believe it She knows all the answers ‘Cause this is not about what you’ve done, This is not about what you feel, You’ve been remade |
Life is full of other voices trying to convince us who we are or who we should be and that WE ARE NOT IT. Our culture is a never ending bully harassing us about how we need to be a certain way to be accepted or approved in the eyes of the general people. But sometimes we are even our own worst enemies when we buy into the lies of the Adversary and let his voice dictate what we believe about ourselves. Comparing yourself to cultural standards is an easy snare to fall into. I think about the time that Moses sent spies into the land of Canaan and they came back saying,
So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.
The Israelite spies looked at how and strong the Nephilim were and they saw that they were not of the same stature, build, or ferocity. They likened themselves to grasshoppers in the shadow of the Nephilim. And thus, the Israelites judged themselves according to what they saw in the land of Canaan and concluded their insufficiency according to their lesser physical abilities and believed not upon the promise that the Lord had given them.
I have faced the slander of the Accuser (like the rest of us) more times than I can count and I have struggled with my self-identity and self-confidence because of events or experiences in my life. But the first time I heard this song I felt a surge of strength enter my soul because it helped me realize that we all are tempted to doubt who we are and how much our lives really matter in light of our past or present circumstances. At times, I am sure each one of us has entertained the question about whether we think we have messed up so bad that we have ruined everything because we think we are the only one with problems or that we are not as talented, skilled, beautiful, out-spoken, honest, truthful, kind, affectionate, loving, responsible, or whatever other category of life we don’t quite measure up in by the world’s opinion.
I am here to confess, “You are more than the choices that you’ve and you are more than the sum of your past mistakes!” Don’t let culture convince you that you are something you are not, and don’t let it pressure you into thinking you need to be what it wants you to be. You are already who God wants you to be and nothing can change that!
